The Hillside Staff

Mission Statement

Our mission is to love God as we lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Core Values

We believe in the importance of developing our spiritual walk through these 5 areas: Worship, Grow, Serve, Share, and Give.

Worship - Worship is the way Christ followers express our love, gratitude, and respect for God. It may take place alone or when joining with others in groups that are large or small. At Hillside, we follow the biblical principle to meet together to praise God as a community and encourage each other on a journey with Christ. Times of worship may include music, reading the Bible, singing, praying, silence, and giving an offering. Although worship transcends musical style, different types of music express and communicate more powerfully with individuals. We offer different styles of worship environments for this very reason. We have worship venues for pre-school, elementary, middle school & high school, and adults of all ages. We are one church, in several locations, with many different styles of music… all worshipping our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s tempting to give our devotion to things of this world. But as Christ followers, we worship God because Christ said, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only’” (Luke 4:8). Christ calls us to worship God and praise Him in spirit and in truth. We invite you to explore all our worship environments and find one where you can connect and participate.

Grow - As something grows, it becomes larger, its roots dig deeper, and it becomes stronger and produces beneficial things like food or seed. A person’s relationship with Christ is very similar in nature. In order for something to grow and thrive, it must be fed and nurtured. Any relationship of value cannot thrive if it is ignored or starved. We believe that studying the Word of God and connecting with other Christ followers in biblical community are two vital steps toward spiritual growth. The Psalmist said, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). The Bible gives direction and illumination so that we can walk into maturity as believers. Whether you join a Home Group, a Campus Group, or a Study Group, there are endless opportunities for growth with others here. It is our mission to love God as we lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Serve - In a world where the norm is merely taking care of oneself, Christ calls us to care for and help others. Serving is a core value at Hillside because it was at the core of what Christ did for others. And we want to be like Him. Whether serving within the church in one of the many areas to volunteer or serving outside the walls of Hillside in our community to reach the broken and impoverished, extending help to others brings honor to God’s name and a sense of purpose and joy to our hearts. We want each person at Hillside to serve in an area that uses his or her unique gifts and personalities. 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” There are so many places to serve people at Hillside that can utilize your unique and God-given abilities. You can either serve on your own or recruit your Home Group or Campus Group to join up and experience the joy together.

Share - From the time we’re children, we’re taught to share good things. It’s a generous and loving heart that doesn’t keep good things for itself. As Christ followers, we hold a remarkable gift we’re called to share with those around us. When we share what we have, we’re taking the chance to invest it into another person’s life. It’s risky. But the amazing return is worth the risk. A life changed by Christ is a beautiful thing to see. It brings hope to others and glory to God. Sharing can be as simple as inviting someone to a Home Group, a worship service, or for coffee on a Saturday morning.

We’re called to share the truth of Christ’s love both to the world and in our own neighborhoods. Whether sharing on a mission trip in a place like Belize or investing in lives in a downtown women’s mission or simply inviting that person you see at the gym every week to worship, there are so many ways to share God’s love. Sharing Christ is simple. We just share what He’s done in our lives and invite people to join us.

God had a perfect Son, Jesus Christ, and generously shared Him with the world for our benefit. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” He gave Christ to us so that we can share His love and mercy with others.

Give - Hillside is a generous community that is clinging to the truth that Jesus spoke when he said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). This openness to give has brought a real atmosphere of love and grace to the church. There’s no way around it. We are called to give. It’s easy to become stingy or fearful and hold on to everything we can. But God calls us to give without regret and live life with our hands open to Him. We believe the Bible’s teaching on tithing and that it is God’s will for us to do so. We also believe tithing is merely the first step toward living a life of giving. We are called to be good caretakers of our wealth and be financially responsible, which is why we provide solid resources and counseling in this area for anyone at Hillside.

Our core values are based on what we believe about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Man, Salvation, the Bible, and the Church. This is what we believe:

God – God is Creator and Ruler of the universe. There is one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. He is Holy and Righteous. The only way to have an authentic relationship with God is through Jesus Christ.
Genesis 1:1; Psalm 145:21; Colossians 1:16; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; II Corinthians 13:14

Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ has been one with God since eternity past, and God created the universe through Him. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, took on flesh and blood, and made His dwelling among us. His physical death on the cross saves us from our sin. His bodily resurrection changed the course of history and created the path to eternal life with God.
Colossians 1:15-20; Matthew 1:18-2; John 1:1-4, 14:6, 3:16; I Corinthians 15:1-8

The Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He makes us aware of our need to follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. He lives in every Christian from the moment that person gives his or her life to Christ. He gives us guidance and leadership on a daily basis so we can obey God’s Word and do what is right. He gives each of us spiritual gifts for the purpose of serving the Body of Christ. We seek to live under His control in all situations.
John 16:8-9; Acts 2:38; Romans 8:26-27; Ephesians 1:13-14, 3:16, 4:30, 5:18; Galatians 5:16,25; I Corinthians 12,13

Man - We believe that man, created by God, willfully sinned, and as a result, is lost and without hope apart from Jesus Christ.
Genesis 1:27; Isaiah 53:6, 59:1-2; Romans 3:23, 5:8

Salvation – Salvation is a free gift of God. The death of Christ on the cross is the only sufficient payment for our sins. Every person has sinned, but every person also can be forgiven and saved by Christ. This salvation is available for any person who puts his or her trust in Christ as Savior. Those trusting Christ should ask Him for forgiveness of sin, believe in Him, confess their faith in Him, and be baptized. We show our faith publicly through baptism.
Romans 3:23, 6:23; John 3:16; Romans 10:9; Acts 2:38; Matthew 28:19; Matthew 3:13-17

The Bible - We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for all matters of faith. The Bible is God’s Word to all people.
Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 3:16; Psalm 119:105,160

The Church - The Church is the Body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit to continue the task of leading others to faith in Christ and teaching followers of Christ to obey and serve Him. Involvement in a local church is critical to individual growth, fellowship, and support for life’s day-to-day challenges.
Matthew 28:19-20; I Corinthians 12:12-27; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 2:19
